About the Empowerwoment Project

The mission of the Empowerwoment Project is to create more gender-equal workplaces. Does your organization have too few women in leading positions? This program for female growth will help your organization to become much more gender-equal!

The Empowerwoment Project was explicitly designed for women to step up and grow into more leading positions within the organization they are currently working for. A group of 4+ ambitious women – all from the same organization- will deep-dive into why there are too few women in leadership positions in that specific organization.

The approach of the Empowerwoment Project is unique. We’ll look at what women can do themselves, AND we’ll look at what the organization can do to improve gender equality. For this to work, the women and the organization must be very committed and motivated. Then, amazing things can happen!

It’s time for action! It’s time to increase gender equality in organizations!

What does the program look like?

The Empowerwoment project is a program that consists of an online course environment, two books, and monthly meetings amongst the participants within an organization. It runs for about a year.

Participants will start by watching videos and completing (short) writing assignments. They’ll share their work with the other participants of the Empowerwoment Project. Afterward, they’ll discuss their assignments and what they learned in peer group meetings. Next to reading and watching videos, they’ll also assess the organization’s current policies on gender equality and (if needed) raise questions and offer advice and solutions to improve gender equality.

Results of the empowerwoment project

At the end of the project, participants will have more knowledge and insights:

  • in inequality and the cause of inequality
  • in what obstacles women encounter
  • what you could do to empower yourself
  • what the role of the organization is that causes fewer women to grow within that organization

At the end of the project, participants will have:

  • practiced adapting behavior
  • made a practical  plan that’ll help to grow and step up
  • assessed the organization on gender equality
  • done an intervention within the organization
  • made people in the organization more aware of gender inequality

At the end of the project, participants receive a certificate for the Empowerwoment Project. Also, in the final module of the project, we make a plan to ensure that the things we learn and the actions we take in the empowerwoment project have a lasting effect on the participants and the organization.

The online learning environment

The online learning environment entails all the project content you can do individually and independently. Participants can decide when to spend time on the lessons in the online learning environment. Next to reading material in the learning environment, we’ll also read two great books: Lean In by Sheryl Sandberg and Inferior by Angela Saini.

In each module, there are several videos. Some videos are designed specifically for the Empowerwoment Project and will help participants to go through this project. Other videos are videos from other sources that help participants better understand the material.

Peer group meetings

Next to the online learning environment, there will be meetings (online or in real life) with peers. Peers are the other women from the same organization also participating in the Empowerwoment Project. One of the peer group members will be the chairwoman of the group. There will be 12 peer group meetings in total.

Participants will be asked to prepare an assignment for each meeting. Also, they’ll read the assignments of the members of your peer group. Participants will discuss the course’s reading material and videos in the meetings. Next to that, the peer group meetings will be used to reflect.

Time commitment?

The Empowerwoment Project takes a full year to complete. It takes 47 weeks, but with vacations and planning meetings, it’ll probably take over a full year.

Some weeks will be a little busier than other weeks. In weeks with a peer group meeting, that meeting will be the only thing participants will have to do. The workload will be an hour and a half. Sometimes, participants need to read a book, which means they’ll need to put in more hours, but those hours are more flexible.

For most weeks, participants will spend 2 to 3 hours on the project. If the time investment is heavy, it’s an individual investment, making planning much more manageable. Each lesson indicates how much time people should reserve to complete that specific lesson.
